BP Wood Fun Fact:
Did you know that wood comes in a variety of types, each with unique characteristics? Generally speaking, wood is classified into three main categories: softwood, hardwood, and engineered wood.
- Softwood comes from Coniferous trees like Redwood, Pine, Cedar, and Spruce. It's generally lighter and easier to work with, making it a popular choice for construction, decks, pergolas, and furniture.
- Hardwood is sourced from deciduous trees such as Oak, Maple, Cherry, Ipé, Teak, Mahogany, Maple, and more. This is more dense and durable, often used for high-quality furniture, decks, featured fences, decorative trellis, flooring, and cabinetry.
- Engineered wood, also known as veneer wood, is a manufactured product created by binding together various wood fibers, veneers, and particles. This type of wood is designed to enhance stability, and can mimic the appearance of solid wood while being more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Generally, engineered wood may only be refinished once. This must be done with lots of care to not burn through its thin layer.
Whether you're crafting furniture or building a home, understanding the different types of wood can help you choose the best material for your project!
