Specialty Outdoor Wood
General Recommended Upkeep Period for Exterior Wood: Every 2 Years (Depending on sun exposure.)
Note: Most new wood is usually made up of redwood. On rare occasions, structures will be made of exotic wood.
When treating your wooden fences, be mindful of more susceptible areas. These can be anywhere where they face more sun exposure (such as South East facing) or water damage.
For example, take note of areas where water from your sprinklers hit the surface. This constant moisture will cause the color on your fence to deteriorate much quicker and need upkeep faster.
Horizontal structures face more sun exposure compared to vertical surfaces, like fences. This causes them to require more upkeep.
NOTE: When applying your chosen stain or paint, higher sheen levels are not recommended for decks. Glossy sheens can be hazardous in high foot traffic areas.
Pergolas/trellis are wooden outdoor structures, similar to trellis. They can be built fleshed up to the backdoor patio entrance. Their purpose is to protect individuals from weather and water, as well as outdoor furniture.
They are commonly built to support the upward growth of garden plants, and act as an outdoor decorative piece. It is common for these plants to wrap around the beams of the trellis. When refinishing and repainting, we, as paint contractors, do not disturb them in respect to your garden. We will occasionally use wood panels to delicately lift the plants and seal the tops of the trellis to further support it.
When treating your wooden pergolas/trellis, keep in mind that the top areas require more upkeep due to their constant exposure to sun and water.
Additionally, any joints on the supporting beams are prone to opening more quickly due to the movement of the wood. We recommended check ups on a yearly basis.
Staining and varnishing provides the homeowner with a much more natural finish and look. However, if you’re seeking a sleeker and more solid look, painting could be the option for you.
Common reasons homeowners prefer to paint their wood to match the color of the exterior body, and in hopes that it will last longer than varnishes and require less upkeep.
